A New Beginning

Sandy DeWitt bio and artist statement

I began my journey in photography with a gift of a 110 from my father at the age of 12 (Does anyone remember a 110?). Well I guess I was lucky enough to show some enthusiasm in the art form and he graduated my 110 to a 35mm at the age of 13. I was unstoppable, at that point I knew what I loved to do, I knew what I had to do, where I was going to college, what I was to be when "I grow up" (I'm still waiting to grow up!).

During high school my father, further nurturing my love for the craft, introduced me to the world of the darkroom, where I excelled in my self-taught skills and became even more enthralled with the medium. So off to college I went. In 1985 I graduated from the Rhode Island School of Photography 4th in my class along with a Court of Honor (Best of Show in portraiture) for my graduating portfolio. I had all the knowledge of all aspects of the medium; color, B&W, commercial, portraiture, photojournalism & wedding photography. I learned the rules, but best of all I learned how to break the rules!

Currently, I am teaching myself the incredible world of the digital camera, learning the new controls I have over my own photographs.

With my art work I try to show the world in a way most people do not see it. I try to get others to stop and smell the flowers, if but for a moment. I try to get you close enough to the subject so you can feel the mist on your skin, the delicate smell of the flowers wafting your way, the bright sun you must shield your eye against to see the picture clear. And at times I create feelings where there are none. While others are "putting up parking lots" I preserve time and space for the future generations, so they too can see what others have destroyed, or places they can not go. Also, I try to leave a little bit of me in every picture I create.
